Why a Professional Wedding Photographer is Worth Every Penny!

Why a Professional Wedding Photographer is Worth Every Penny!

Congratulations! If you’re reading this, there’s a solid chance that you are engaged and debating whether or not a professional wedding photographer is really worth it! Considering wedding planning is such an extensive process and everyone has a budget in place, questions will start swirling on where you could cut costs. Even though the new iPhones have tremendous image quality or you may have a friend that recently got a new Nikon for Christmas, we’re here today to tell you why a professional wedding photographer is one of the best investments you can make!

Before getting into the specifics, I would like to provide you with a quick introduction. My name is Ian Ramirez and I serve as the venue director at Madera Estates in Conroe, TX. We are a Spanish and European inspired event space that takes pride in making the entire planning process as seamless as possible. Having been in the industry for a few years now, I’ve been honored to have had the opportunity to work with many talented photographers! Seeing them work on-site instantly reveals that wedding photography is more than just an expensive camera. It’s a skill that truly comes from years of experience and hardwork. Not to mention, seeing the breathtaking photos after the weddings also makes that question a no-brainer. With that said, let’s get into a few of the reasons why a professional wedding photographer is a MUST.

Less stress on the big day

Planning a wedding can be stressful! It’s as simple as that! Remember though, if you truly want this to be the best day ever, you can’t let that stress spill into the wedding day itself! Simply put, a professional
wedding photographer will ease a lot of your concerns when it comes to capturing every single moment. With years of experience under their belt, they’ll know what shots make up a perfect wedding album. They will understand where they should be at all times to ensure they can capture these moments and you won’t have to worry about a single thing! You’ll enjoy every minute of your wedding and take their advice on what backdrops or lighting will create those picture-perfect moments!

Knowing the in’s and out’s of camera equipment

Our next point is going to piggyback off something we briefly mentioned in the opening paragraph. “Just because someone has a nice DSLR camera doesn’t necessarily mean they know how to use it.” One of the biggest benefits of hiring a professional is they know how to truly unlock the complete potential of these specialized cameras. Paying for a professional provides you with access to all of this, as well as having someone that has a variety of lenses and other gear in their arsenal. They’ll know what devices will work best in different environments. And when it comes to venues with both outdoor and indoor settings (like Madera Estates), this equipment knowledge is invaluable! All in all, a camera is a tool and it’s the person using it, that truly creates these beautiful works of art!

Just one chance

If you hire an amateur plumber, electrician or any other service provider, you can always correct their mistakes. Yes, it might be an inconvenience and headache at the time, but it can be fixed! When it comes to your wedding day, this is a “one chance” opportunity. If you don’t get a shot of cutting the cake, there’s no do-overs. You have this one chance to capture all of those amazing moments from the big day! Sounds like a lot of pressure, but don’t forget that this is what these professionals do for a living. There’s a reason new couples keep paying them to photograph their weddings. In the end, when selecting your photographer, make sure you have complete confidence in them and have seen some of their prior work. Remember, photos are something you’ll treasure forever!

Back-up plan

Any time you’re dealing with technology, it’s critical to have a back-up plan. Given the point that we just mentioned about this being a “one chance” opportunity, all professional photographers should have a back-up plan for these “what if” scenarios. You never know when a battery will die early, they could drop their camera or anything else that’s technical in nature could go wrong. As I’m sure the awesome team at Melonhead Photo would agree, professional photographers will always have extra cameras, lenses, batteries, memory cards and anything else that goes into their standard gear. With this in mind, it’ll make it much easier for you to relax, knowing that you have plenty of beautiful photos to look forward to!

Personally speaking, this is one of the most incredible qualities I’ve observed from photographers here at Madera. Weddings move quickly and there’s always something going on. Being able to see some of these surprises pop up out of nowhere and noticing how the photographers already know what their next move is continues to amaze me! Preparation is everything!

For example, compare this topic to an amateur photographer. Chances are if a camera were to break mid-wedding, you very well could end up with an album half-filled with iPhone pictures. Probably not what you envisioned?

Let your friends enjoy the celebration

Typically, the alternative to hiring a professional photographer is to have a friend or relative perform these duties. At this point in the article, you’ve likely started to realize putting an amateur in charge of these duties can be a risky choice! Yet another reason arguing for a pro is the fact that you probably want your friends to join in on the celebration too, right? After all, why would you have invited them to your wedding in the first place? In addition, there’s likely going to be some moments where they’re sidetracked chatting with another friend or relative, even though something else is going on that should probably be captured!

In the end, the last thing you want to arise from your wedding day is a strained relationship with one of your closest pals. When hiring a friend, you run the risk of them holding a grudge for working for free or you not being able to tell them that you’re just not happy with the results. Again, not necessarily a win-win situation!

You get what you pay for

We’ve all heard the statement, “you get what you pay for!” Frankly, when it comes to wedding photography, this couldn’t be more spot on! Going with a professional all but ensures you’ll receive amazing results! This can be said for just about every vendor you would hire in the wedding industry. Caterers, florists, videographers, DJ’s, you name it! Yes, it will require an investment. At the same time though, we feel confident in saying it will make a massive difference and be well worth it! Plus, there is a contract involved when working with a professional, so delivering these amazing photos isn’t really an option for them!

Still Need Your Dream Venue?

Did you recently get engaged and are trying to figure out the best first step for planning your dream day? Considering most venues book up more than a few months in advance, we strongly recommend getting some tours scheduled and finalizing your venue early on. This is a perfect way for not only seeing if the venue can match the backdrop you envisioned for your big day, but also provide some suggestions for the other vendors involved in a wedding. If you ever want to take a look around our venue in Conroe, we would be happy to show you the area and answer any questions you may have! Don’t hesitate to book a free champagne tour HERE.

I would like to give you a huge thanks to the awesome team at Melonhead Photo for allowing us to hop on their blog for this guest post. If you’re looking for a talented team of photographers for your wedding, look no further!

Marianne & Erik – San Diego, California Destination Engagement Session

This destination engagement session in San Diego was a perfect backdrop for this California-Texas couple. It was our first time in California, so we had to take advantage and do some portraits on the beach. Galveston has nothing on this! Plus, the temperature was amazing. Take us back to San Diego for any of your portrait needs! 🙂

Catalena & Nick – College Station Engagement Portraits

We love customizing engagement sessions around locations that are special to our couples. For Catalena and Nick, Texas A&M will always hold a special place in their hearts. They wanted to make sure it played a role in their engagement session. Especially, The Century Tree. Anyone who attended A&M will always remember the sheer beauty and size of the massive oak. We loved exploring Downtown Bryan, as it had such a great variety of colors and textures. Perfect for making this photo session really pop!

Suzy – Bridal Portraits New Waverly

Suzy has a love for horses, and we wanted to capture that in her bridal photos. There is just something amazing about horses, and we love how these bridal portraits came out! We love how she decided to wear her mother’s wedding dress and did her bridal portraits on the family ranch where her parents got married.

Second Shooter: Why Two are Better than One

There are many benefits to having two photographers, and it’s becoming more and more common in modern weddings. Why do some couples decide to have a second shooter at their wedding?

1. Logistics.

One photographer just can’t be in two places at the same time, which can be a problem if you want pictures of the bride and groom getting ready. Since the bride and groom get ready in different locations, this means one of them probably won’t get professional pictures. With two photographers, you won’t miss any of those special and fun moments. You can also get pictures of the bride and groom’s faces at the exact same moment as the bride enters the room, a feat which is difficult for a single photographer.

Having two shooters is also helpful at the reception. With so much going on, it can be hard for one photographer to catch every interesting moment as it happens.

Also, some churches are very strict on their photographers. For any church who places restrictions on where the photographer can go during the ceremony, you will want a second shooter. Some strict churches will not even let a photographer move from one spot the entire ceremony.

2. Candid shots

While one photographer is focusing on the more formal pictures, the other one can walk around getting candid shots. These pictures are usually very fun and lively, and are great for your wedding album.

NJF_42643. Style

With a second shooter, you can get different picture styles at the same time. Two photographers can shoot the ceremony from different perspectives, giving you a wider variety of images to enjoy later. For example, you may want some close-ups of the ceremony, but you think it would also be neat to have pictures taken from above in the balcony too. With two photographers, this is easy. One can take pictures from the balcony while the other takes them from below.

4. Backup

You have an automatic backup on site at your wedding in case one photographer falls and breaks a leg or gets food poisoning. Yuck. Plus, you have a backup of every major event of the day in case of camera failure.

I love having a second shooter work with me. It allows me to divide and conquer. This person can step in and act as a lighting assistant when needed, and various other roles that can help execute a creative shot. If you can afford it, adding a second shooter is great for rounding out your entire collection. Just make sure the person who will be second shooting is also a professional photographer (So glad I met Nick!), as this will get you the most from your investment. Sadly, some photographers are known to book a random second photographer just days before your wedding!

Don’t forget to ask about the second shooter’s experience! When considering a package that offers multiple shooters, brides need to remember to add inquiring about the second shooter to their list of consultation questions. For brides that consider packages offering additional shooters, make sure they discuss the second shooter, their experience and the level of their involvement with their main photographer before making any final decisions. We would hate to see a bride waste precious budget on someone to just hold a camera. Brides should remember to ask about this and not assume that the second photographer has experience.

If you feel that your wedding is too small to have two photographers and it would be a distraction. Think again. Melanie and Nick have photographed extremely small weddings together and the coverage is always better when we work together. Check out this small wedding and the coverage we provided, here.

First Look: Wedding Photos You Won’t Want to Miss

Wedding photos always have a touch of magic in them. They capture some of the most special moments of a new couple’s lives. But few wedding pictures truly capture the magic of the “First Look” shots.

What is the first look? Although this is a popular wedding photo choice, many people don’t actually know what it means. Basically, the first look is a staged moment before the ceremony where the bride and groom see each other for the first time. Usually these pictures exclude friends and family, and occur either privately or at least a few feet away from everyone else. These pictures are all about the bride and groom seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day. They capture the intimacy, love, and passion between the couple.

First Look Wedding Photographer

Picture this. The groom is looking at the photographer as the bride begins to walk towards him. She’ll tap him on the shoulder, and he turns to see her. His faces captures the wonder at seeing his gorgeous bride for the first time, and her face shows her excitement and love for him.

Once these intimate pictures are finished, the photographer takes the traditional bride and groom portraits, then the group pictures of the bridal party and family.

Although some couples dislike the idea of seeing each other before the ceremony, most couples who have done it say that they are glad they did it this way because it allowed them to relax for the rest of the wedding. And most couples find that taking their pictures first does not take away from the magic of the bride’s appearance at the beginning of the ceremony.

In the end, you get to choose how you want your wedding pictures taken. But if you want truly magical pictures of you and your spouse, we highly recommend the first look pictures.

Melony – Townhall Texas Bridal Portraits, Conroe

We had a fabulous time at Townhall Texas with Melony during her bridal session. Her ‘never back down’ attitude would never let you know that she had torn multiple ligaments in her foot the previous week. It took a bit of balancing and a number of timeouts during the day, but she pushed through and I know she’s in love with the photos! This brides touching story, and memorable wedding will always stay in our hearts. Her wedding photos were published in Love Wins Texas Weddings Magazine!

Jessica & Eli – Coast Guard Wedding Photography at Bernhardt Winery

What better of a destination for a wedding than a winery? This is exactly what Jessica and Eli chose, by having their Coast Guard wedding at Bernhardt Winery at Plantersville, Texas. As we drove through rainstorms on the way to the winery, we hoped and prayed that our couple would have a dry hour for their nuptials. And that is exactly what God did for this lovely couple. It was so awesome getting to meet all of their family and friends who traveled from far and wide to see them say, “I do”.
